This learning unit focusses on development of advanced skills/strategies applied by speech pathologists working in rehabilitation with older adults and individuals with neurological disorders. On campus workshops will focus on the development of a variety of assessment and intervention skills considered important for advanced practice in the areas of motor speech and voice rehabilitation. All students will consider the application of principles of motor learning and neural plasticity to the development of optimal intervention goals and the implications for their translation to effective person-centred practice. Impairment based and functional assessment and management of motor speech and voice issues will be addressed within the context of the ICF framework. Topics will include current evidence for the assessment and management of motor speech and voice disorders in acute, sub-acute, chronic and progressive neurological cases. Emphasis will be placed on maximising an individual's participation within their environment. Following workshops, skills will be applied in the workplace and new programs trialled and reported.
