Advanced Clinical Reasoning for Speech Pathologists in Aged and Neurological Rehabilitation

In this is an integral component of the post graduate rehabilitation program for Speech Pathologys and focuses on providing current clinicians with the opportunity to review, appreciate and enhance the quality of their clinical reasoning in practice. Knowledge and skills will be utilised in subsequent units and applied to holistic management of patients with neurological impairments and older adults across the continuum of care. Students will explore models of clinical reasoning across health disciplines while focussing on decision making by speech pathologists. Advanced reasoning skills related to assessment; patient-centred goal setting; selection and application of evidence-based treatment strategies; and use of outcome measures. The unit aims to guide students in their critical analysis of current practice, facilitating consideration of advanced content knowledge and skills required for optimal professional management of patient populations within a multicultural society and varied rehabilitation contexts.
