This unit will help students explore significant aspects of the history of Catholicism in Australia, such as the development of Catholic education systems, the involvement of Catholics in the split in the Australian Labor Party in the 1950s, and the changes which took place in the Church in the wake of the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. It will enhance students’ skills in critical reflection and ability to analyse historical evidence and evaluate differing viewpoints. Overall, it will encourage a mature understanding of Australian Catholic history and identity and a sound appreciation of the legacy of the past.
