This unit focuses on the development of midwifery knowledge, skills and attitudes related to the transition from pregnancy to labour and normal childbirth. Theoretical perspectives on working with pain during labour and interventions to assess the progress of labour will be examined. Mechanisms of normal labour and management of selected serious childbirth complications are addressed. The focus of midwifery care within the unit is the midwife-woman partnership model. The role of partner family for birth support is also analysed.
