This unit introduces the underpinning knowledge, philosophies, roles and practice of midwifery. Students extend their knowledge of normal human anatomy and physiology and health assessment to the alterations and changes across the childbearing continuum and beginning midwifery assessment skills. Collaborative and autonomous aspects of midwifery practice are explored in relation to scope of practice. Continuity of care experiences commence with preparation to journey with women and recruitment of pregnant women in the Follow Through Journey program. Students commence their professional portfolio as a basis for ongoing reflection and response to their learning needs and development of the ANMC competency standards for the midwife.
