This unit explores the evolution of the sustainability movement and differing perspectives of the needs of communities. It examines current issues such as population growth, demand for resources, agriculture, energy, carbon pollution and climate change. It focuses particularly on environmental sustainability, equity and social justice and on challenges in the provision of products and services, waste minimisation and the use and reuse of resources. Government initiatives to promote environmental sustainability and address climate change are identified. Environmentally sustainable practices by individuals, industry and government and examples of the application of innovations in technology, policy and practice in different global contexts are discussed.
