ENGL332 The Book of Books: the Bible and Its Uses in Western Literature
10 cp Prerequisites 20 cp from 200-level unit in Literature Teaching Organisation: On campus lectures and tutorials supported by online materials/activities. Three contact hours per week over twelve weeks. Students should anticipate undertaking 150 hours of study for this unit, including class attendance, readings and assignment preparation.
In this unit students will examine the formation and reception of the bible in Jewish and Christian tradition, with special emphasis on the relationship between Jewish and Christian scriptures, canon formation, translation, and the issues of interpretation and authority that have conditioned reading practices from antiquity to the present. A selection of poetic and dramatic texts that respond to the biblical tradition from the middle ages to the twenty-first century will also be examined in order to demonstrate how they engage with the retelling, imitating, echoing, and subverting of scripture.
