This unit is designed to develop an understanding of secondary science education in all its dimensions, including the philosophy, values and ethics which underpin the teaching of science and its application to social and technological issues. Preservice teachers will become familiar with planning, resource use, assessment and evaluating science curricula to meet the needs of a diversity of learners. Issues of effective and innovative teaching will be central to this unit. In particular, learning is focused on aspects of science education consistent with relevant national and state curriculum documentation for the junior secondary school student. Learning will focus on teaching both the knowledge and understanding of science concepts and the skills and processes to enable students to work in a scientific manner, including safety procedures and mandatory requirements. Preservice teachers will reflect on these dimensions of science through a range of best practice pedagogies specific to science.
