This unit introduces preservice teachers to the teaching of History in the secondary school. A key focus of the unit is the design of learning experiences that develop preservice teachers’ understanding of historical inquiry based pedagogy, historical knowledge and understanding as well as historical reasoning and interpretation appropriate to the needs of school students in secondary schools. This unit will enable preservice teachers to develop lesson and program sequences based on relevant state, tertiary or national syllabi and curricula. It is designed to develop an understanding of appropriate literacy strategies to meet the needs of all students and will focus on the reading, writing, viewing and interpreting a range of written, ICT, visual texts and sources. Preservice teachers will become competent with the purpose, strategies and implementation of assessment and reporting principles within the relevant state, territory and national curriculum documents. Throughout the unit preservice teachers will be prepared for, and contribute to professional discussions about the teaching of History.
