This unit provides a framework for understanding the exercise of leadership in education systems. It explores the capabilities required in leadership exercised beyond the bounds of single schools, particularly in educational authorities and system offices, in related educational networks and through congregational support structures with responsibility for shaping, facilitating and monitoring quality schooling. It will consider the interplay of the multiple agencies in the educational arena including governments and government agencies, government and non government education authorities, non-government organisations, professional associations, unions, churches and political parties. In particular it will consider the issues related to alignment among the different levels at which leadership is exercised – i.e. at classroom, school and system authority/network level, and how these influence educational quality. The unit provides a rich experience of collaborative learning and community in the context of a residential program with an integrated experience of spirituality. This unit is closely articulated with the second core unit EDSL601, which will commence during the same residential.
