This unit is designed to promote close examination of the principles of optimal classroom learning and teaching. Prospective LOTE educators will become familiar with current national, state and system policies and curriculum documents regarding LOTE education, and will study theories of language acquisition and LOTE teaching methodology appropriate to the different stages of schooling and for the macro language skills. Students will be introduced to the principles of communicative language learning and the implications for the planning and implementation of LOTE programs. There will be an emphasis on the senior secondary curriculum. Teaching strategies relating to genres, mixed ability classes, learning styles, the use of best available resources including electronic ones will be examined, together with assessment and reporting issues.
