EDLA660 Literacy and Language in the Early Years of Schooling
This unit focuses on the teaching of language and literacy in primary school settings. The unit provides pre-service educators with a comprehensive understanding of the reading and writing processes with a particular focus on the development of emergent reading and writing. The unit equips pre-service educators with essential knowledge of planning and monitoring early reading and writing development and provides a socio-cultural lens for exploring reading and writing behaviours. Pre-service educators will develop skills, knowledge and understandings to support emergent reading and writing development across the early years landscape of prior to school, home and school settings and within contemporary textual fields. A range of contemporary pedagogical approaches (including the use of ICTs) will be explored through an emphasis on theory and research with practical application. This presentation of theory, research, and practical ideas will provide pre-service educators with a comprehensive, professional foundation to guide practice. In particular, a sound understanding of the knowledge, skills and processes required to support learners, including the participation rights of children, with emphasis given to Indigenous children, children with disabilities and children experiencing marginalisation, must be clearly demonstrated.
