EDLA659 Language and Multiple Literacies (including ICT and Numeracy) as Communication in the Early Years (Birth to Five)
This unit will explore contemporary issues relating to teaching and learning in prior to school contexts and will focus particularly on the way emergent and early literacy, numeracy and ICT knowledge and understandings are developed. Pre-service educators will investigate teaching and learning practices that engage young children, birth to five, in open ended opportunities that build on their lived experiences, stimulate curiosity and promote thinking and expression through languages (including numeric and ICT languages). Students will develop skills that support language and literacy learning within homes, communities and educational contexts ensuring that children develop multi-literacies while engaging in everyday and authentic practices at home and in prior to school contexts and in the wider community. Pre-service educators will examine research in early literacy and numeracy, develop an understanding of emergent skill in these areas and critique issues relating to literacy/numeracy and diversity, literacy/numeracy and families and literacy/numeracy and gender. Contemporary pedagogical issues and the monitoring of and planning for early literacy/numeracy development, including specific reference Australian Indigenous children, children with disabilities and children experiencing marginalisation, also will be examined.
