EDFD671 Understanding Childhood Development and Learning in the Socio-Cultural Context of the Early Years
This unit is designed to give early years educators an in-depth and practical understanding of young children's holistic development and learning. The unit focuses on multiple Australian contexts across family educational settings, culture, language, religion, location and community. It will make links between important historical and contemporary theories about the nature of learning and development in the years, birth to eight and will include consideration to the learning and development of Australian Indigenous children, children with disabilities and children experiencing marginalisation. The unit will consider a range of observational and documentation skills necessary to inform rich understandings of young children’s learning and development. A specific focus on narrative observational skills will be developed and used as the basis for interpretative analysis within a socio-cultural theoretical framework in line with national and state early years learning frameworks. These professional analyses will then be used as the basis for the design and implementation of inclusive and respectful teaching and learning experiences.
