This unit of study examines definitions and models of giftedness and talent as well as the characteristics and profiles of gifted students. Historical and contemporary theories and approaches concerning the education and development of gifted and talented students will be explored, with particular consideration of the principles of social justice, equity and respect for human dignity. Characteristics and profiles of gifted students will enable an understanding of similarities and differences within this population of students in terms of developmental, cultural, social and educational issues that they and their families often experience. Issues concerning social and emotional development, gender, culture, disability, uneven development and underachievement will be introduced, along with issues concerning educational provisions for these students in historical and contemporary contexts. Current educational provisions for gifted students are introduced through contemporary research and practices that recognise certain provisions produce better outcomes for students. Relevant terminology and concepts are also introduced.
