The unit will develop two specific strands: the professional role of the teacher and curriculum planning and integration. It extends the professional knowledge, skills and values of the teacher as decision maker, curriculum designer and implementer. The unit integrates theoretical and practical principles of the teaching and learning paradigm that are addressed in the discipline-specific curriculum studies of the course.
This unit involves students in effectively appraising professional teacher competencies in curriculum knowledge, program development and professional practice with reference to national, state and system demands for professional competence, accomplishment and leadership. Students will be expected to display these professional and practical teaching competencies throughout their practicum placement.
The unit will focus on contemporary issues dynamically according to the latest initiatives of State and Federal governments. The unit is intended to assist students develop an informed practice across the range of curriculum areas, with particular reference to principles of curriculum integration. As such, the unit will focus upon program development and evaluation together with contemporary curriculum issues that include student assessment, critical reflection for enhanced teaching and learning, outcomes based education, student profiling and reporting using performance indicators and benchmarks. The exploration of these issues will contribute to the development of electronic portfolios as evidence of graduate teacher attributes and the demonstration of professional standards relevant to each State.
Students in this unit are typically finishing their preservice teacher education, undertaking a final professional experience and about to apply for teacher employment. This unit therefore takes a critical approach to supporting the students in these pragmatic and culminating enterprises.
