This unit exposes the preservice teacher to a range of contemporary curriculum issues confronting beginning teachers in secondary schools. General issues relating to the organisation of the formal school curriculum will be discussed. The unit has a focus on the reform agenda of the national and state governments and their agencies with a particular focus on the local state context. As this unit will focus on contemporary issues, it is expected that its content will be dynamic and change according to the latest initiatives of the government. Preservice teachers will be challenged to reflect upon the issues raised in this unit from the perspective of preservice teachers’ specific teaching and curriculum areas.
