This unit is designed to explore issues concerning teachers and teaching in the arts areas of visual arts, music, dance and drama education (media education may be included in some states and territories). Students may choose to focus on one area of arts educational specialisation or across the arts as a general domain in education. Through the exploration and analysis of contemporary and historical theoretical frameworks, students will investigate developments in conceptions of teaching pedagogy and practice in arts educational contexts. Students will be expected to be engaged in debates about the role of the arts educator, the nature of instruction in arts education and approaches to researching teaching pedagogy appropriate to arts learning. Participants will be required to read the research literature and respond by identifying critical issues which warrant further investigation within the context of arts education frameworks.
