Many issues of concern confront disadvantaged groups such as people with disabilities in Australian society. Motivated by the values and perspectives of social justice and human rights, the concept of empowerment is one of the ways people working in the area of disability have sought to represent the values and interests of these groups and enhance their position in society. This unit focuses on defining the concepts of empowerment, advocacy and rights. It looks at issues of disadvantage from the perspective of solutions easily applied by supporters and disadvantaged people themselves. It also defines Duty of Care and Guardianship and explains their relationship to issues of autonomy.
