This second year unit introduces the management role as a pillar of the support structures necessary to ensure that people with disability can exercise authority and control over their life, and work in partnership with professionals. Management of semi professional and professional workers as resources is seen in terms of organisation, supervision and implementation, related to the responsibilities one has for staff, people with disabilities, resources and operations. The most crucial, and often the most difficult aspect of effective management, is the management of oneself. It is said that 'professionals' in the field are not defined as people who hold certain academic qualifications or have a set number of years of experience, but they are defined by the way in which they behave on the job. This unit aims to help develop the foundation skills for effective management at the level of the self, of staff, people with disability and their supporters, and the organisation.
