This unit introduces students to the study of language and its acquisition from mother tongue to learning a second language. It will look at the nature, use and structure in children's language development. Particular emphasis will be given to theories of language development and the history of language and literacy in Timor Leste. It will also consider the processes of reading and writing and specific texts and genres required in an academic context. Students will develop practical skills for observing, describing and analysing language in the Timorese context.
