Good planning, an ethical approach, and appropriate research techniques are essential for effective development work. This subject introduces students to some of the basic approaches and tools for development research. We look at questionnaire design, surveys, qualitative approaches, and preparing reports. Consideration is given to “gender in development” approaches. Finally, the basic principles and practices of social impact assessment (SIA) are explored, including: the history and theory of SIA; preparation and planning for SIA; scoping studies; implementing and undertaking SIAs; the role of the SIA professional; and project evaluation.
