This unit introduces students to the essential requirement of careful planning and preparation for community engagement. It prepares students for a structured experience of development work engagement through a placement in a not-for-profit community organisation, usually overseas and aims to enhance the experience of crossing cultures. Practical travel and health requirements will be discussed as well as the location specific accommodations students may be required to make. The challenges posed by cultural differences will be discussed, as will the importance of culturally sensitive behaviour. Students will be encouraged to integrate action, learning and reflection. From a strong base of human rights and the upholding of the dignity of the human person, students will learn to appreciate context, culture, development, empowerment and transformation.
