This unit investigates the causes and consequences of forced migration, the ethical and legal issues involved, the impact upon individuals and the displaced communities, and the implications for the wider society. A major theme of the unit is an understanding of forced migration issues in Australia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
The unit will explore who are the people being forcibly displaced in today’s world by forces including persecution, conflict, human rights abuses, trafficking, environmental degradation, poverty and natural disasters. It will focus on legal and political responses to these situations of displacement. The unit will further examine forced migration in the light of gender, psychological and psychosocial responses and citizenship.
