10cp Prerequisites Nil Teaching Organisation 2 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent of lectures and workshops with additional weekly reading required.
This unit will address the basic principles and key concepts that underpin effective counselling practice. A number of counselling paradigms will be addressed based on the psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive behavioural therapeutic approaches. Knowledge and understanding of the theories and techniques associated with these approaches will be focused on. Students will become familiar with the process of how individual’s change; with models of psychotherapeutic intervention; with multicultural issues relevant to counselling; and with an integrative approach to counselling. A core aspect of this unit will be to provide students with the opportunity to practice and enhance their counselling skills, and skills for developing a case formulation, and responding to various types of problems including mental health issues. Personal development will enable students to increase self awareness and insight so as to understand the client.
