This unit explores the principles and application of sustainable management of natural resources from local and international perspectives. It deals with the major issues confronting conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of environments including resource management, invasive species, climate change and habitat loss and degradation. It will examine current technological advances that attempt to reduce human impacts on biological diversity whilst allowing sustainable use of the environment including green chemistry and use of renewable and alternative resources.
Students will consolidate their knowledge of ecosystem processes (gained in previous units) and learn how this knowledge is applied by conservation agencies to the successful maintenance of viable populations of plant and animal species in natural and managed ecosystems
