This unit aims to develop preservice early childhood and primary educators’ understanding of teaching science and technology. This will include development of the preservice early childhood and primary educators’ own knowledge and skills in science and technology in the early childhood and primary curriculum, as well as the skills needed to plan learning experiences for children. Constructivism as a theory of learning is central to this unit. It will develop in preservice early childhood and primary educators an understanding of a range of teaching strategies that underpin current best practice in science and technology, including play as curriculum. It also considers issues that impact on children’s learning in science and technology such as area of interest and the need to contextualise content and concepts within the children’s experiences and understandings.
