This unit critically explores the concepts of “race” and “ethnicity”, examines how social divisions around race and ethnicity impact peoples’ lives and how the concepts of race and ethnicity have influenced attitudes, debates and policy development in Australia and in the regional and global context. The unit examines a number of issues in detail such as theories of racism, culture/ ethnicity, multiculturalism, refugees/immigration, and racial and ethnic inequality using international and local examples and case studies, including Indigenous Australia. The unit will also look at relevant social policy and legislation, for example international conventions and the Australian Racial Discrimination Act.
