1. Admission Requirements
An applicant must also comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.
International students need to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements as defined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.
1.1 To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have successfully completed:
- a Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification, with a Grade Point Average (GPA) equivalent to an Australian Catholic University GPA of 4.0; and
- a major study in one teaching area; and
- either a separate minor study in a second teaching area, or a double teaching area;
- which meet the requirements as teaching areas according to the local state/territory registration authority; and
- are teaching areas available within the course.
1.2 For applicants who have successfully completed a Bachelor degree with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) equivalent to an Australian Catholic University GPA of 4.0; but do not meet national subject content requirements or the state/territory requirements, conditional enrolment may, in special circumstances, be approved by the Course Coordinator subject to completion of an additional program of study.
2. Additional Approvals
All students enrolled must have the appropriate approvals before they may enter a classroom.
These are: Blue Card (Qld), Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) or Working with Children Check (NSW and Vic).
International students must provide a police check from their home country. All students who have lived in another country for twelve months or more must provide a police check from that country for that period.
3. Requirements for Completion of the Degree1,2
3.1 To qualify for the Graduate Diploma, a student must complete 100 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:
- 40 cp from Education Studies
- 40 cp from Curriculum Studies
- 20 cp from Year 1 Professional Experience Units.
3.2 Students admitted under admission requirement 1.2 must also complete the agreed program of additional study approved by the Course Coordinator.
4. Exit point
A student who has completed the following requirements may exit from the course with the Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies:
80 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:
- 40 cp from Education Studies;
- 40 cp from Curriculum Studies.

Religious Education and Theology Units: Completion of the Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) and the Graduate Certificate in Religious Education courses, in addition to giving full State accreditation, allows teachers to satisfy requirements for teaching in Catholic or Lutheran schools or State or other Independent schools.
Lutheran Strand: Students who wish to complete the requirements for teaching in Lutheran schools must register and enrol with Australian Lutheran College. The Lutheran units will replace units in the normal Graduate Certificate in Religious Education course and Australian Catholic University will credit the units towards the completion of the Graduate Diploma.
Requirements for working with children: All students enrolled must have the appropriate approvals before they may enter a classroom. These are: Blue Card (Qld), Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) or Working with Children Check (NSW and Vic). International students must bring police check documentation from their own countries.
EDRE521 and EDRE632 are the curriculum units for students undertaking Study of Religions as a teaching subject.
