EFTSL value of units: All 20 cp units in this course have an EFTSL value of 0.25. Units with a cp value of a multiple of 10 have corresponding EFTSL values.
1. Admission Requirements
A candidate for the degree of Doctor of Education must comply with the Research and Professional Doctorate Degree Regulations.
To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed:
- A master degree in education (or equivalent), with a credit average or higher; and
- At least five years’ relevant work experience.

2. Definitions
“Thesis” means a substantial and focused research report of approximately 70,000 words that makes an original and significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge and practice in some aspect of the education profession.
3. Requirements for Completion of the Degree
To qualify for the degree, a student must complete 240 cp by completing the three research units (60 cp) and a thesis (180 cp). Units will be graded on a scale from HD to Fail with a CR required for progression in the program.
A 'credit' minimum is required for each of the three coursework units before a student will be permitted to enrol in the thesis units and complete the course. Students who do not meet this requirement will be withdrawn from the Doctor of Education and may opt to transfer credit to the Master of Education or exit with a Graduate Certificate in Educational Research.
4. Exit Point
The exit point after successful completion of the coursework units in the Doctor of Education for students who do not continue to the thesis units is at AQF level 8, Graduate Certificate in Educational Research.
Graduates at this level will apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate an understanding of how to:
- read and act on educational research;
- conceptualise a researchable study and propose appropriate research aims; and
- write a research proposal.
