This unit examines the major forms of cultural production in art and design in relation to changing social, political, and economic contexts from the1940s to the present. Students are introduced to a broad range of topics such as Abstract Expressionism, Pop, Conceptual Art, Minimalism, Performance Art, Land-site specific Art, Feminist, Installation and Video Art. Historical shifts in thinking and knowledge after WWII will be examined to better understand changing notions of identity,critiques of, and engagement with, modernity and considerable shifts away from traditional art practices. Postcolonialism and other ideologies inherent to the period will be explored as will an emphasis on emerging Indigenous artists both from Australia and the ‘global south’.
