This policy provides the framework for the awarding of University Medals for academic excellence at ACU.
This policy applies to all Bachelor and Bachelor Honours degrees
3.1 Each year the Academic Board may award University Honours Medals and University Medals in recognition of the achievement of outstanding academic merit.
3.2 Each year the Academic Board will determine the minimum Medals score for the following year.
3.3 Each year the Academic Board may award one University Honours Medal and one University Medal per Faculty.
3.4 Each Faculty Board will nominate suitably qualified candidates for consideration by the University Medal Committee.
3.5 The University Medal Committee may recommend to Academic Board that no award will be made in a particular year if no suitably qualified candidates have been nominated by the Faculties and endorsed by the University Medal Committee.
4.1 To be eligible for the award of a University Honours Medal a student must have qualified for a Bachelor degree with first class honours, have met the minimum Medals score and have shown outstanding academic merit throughout their work for the entire degree.
4.2 A student qualified for a Bachelor degree with embedded honours will be eligible for the University Honours Medal.
4.3 To be eligible for the award of a University Medal a student must have qualified for a Bachelor degree, have met the minimum Medals score and have shown outstanding academic merit throughout their work for the degree.
4.4 An award may be made to a candidate on qualifying for a second Bachelor or a Bachelor Honours degree, provided that the candidate qualifies for such degree and is otherwise eligible for the award.
4.5 Factors to be taken into account in determining outstanding academic merit include standard of the honours thesis (if applicable), results achieved, consistency of performance or continuous improvement throughout the course, the length of time taken to complete the course, and other factors deemed relevant by the Faculty Board.
4.6 A student is ineligible for the award of a university medal if they have been guilty of a breach of the Student Conduct and Discipline Policy and Procedures or of the Academic Honesty Policy.
4.7 A student who has failed any unit will not be eligible for the award of any university medal1.
5.1 Recommendations for the awards shall be made by the respective Faculty Boards.
6.1 The Academic Board shall consider each recommendation made to it by a Faculty Board and, if approved, shall advise Senate of the names of the recipients of the award. It shall be the duty of the Academic Board to maintain, as far as possible, a uniformity of practice in relation to recommendations.
