2. Roles and Responsibilities of students
It is the responsibility of students to engage actively in the learning process, to participate according to relevant course, unit and assessment requirements, and to adhere to University policies affecting their enrolment and progression through their course1.
Details of specific course, unit and assessment requirements are outlined in the course rules, Course Enrolment Guide and Unit Outlines. Table 1 provides a summary of actions that a student should take at various stages of the study period in relation to each unit and its assessment requirements.
Table 1 – Summary of student roles and responsibilities in relation to assessment
Timing and category of task |
Action required |
At commencement of study period/on joining a unit |
LEO (Learning Environment Online) |
- Check their enrolment in all their units on LEO (Learning Environment Online) from one week prior to the start of semester.
- Contact the Course Coordinator if any problems are identified.
|
Unit Outline |
Access the Unit Outline from LEO and become familiar with the requirements prescribed for completion of the unit. |
Students with disabilities |

|
Assessment tasks |
- Complete assessment tasks diligently and honestly to provide evidence of learning achievements in the unit.
- Meet all assessment requirements as specified in the Unit Outline.
- Complete assignment cover sheets for all non-examination assessment tasks; this includes certification that the work is the student’s own and that all cited works have been acknowledged and referenced. Any assignment task that does not include this cover sheet and/or declaration will not be assessed. Where assessments are to be submitted electronically, students are required to complete the electronic declaration of originality2.
- Submit3 assessment tasks by the due date. Assessment tasks submitted after the due or extended date will incur, for each whole or part of a calendar day that the work is overdue, a 5% penalty of the maximum marks available for that assessment task up to a maximum of 15%. Assessment tasks received more than three calendar days after the due or extended date will not be allocated a mark.

Collecting marked assessments and reviewing feedback |
- Collect assessment tasks in the manner prescribed. Students may give written authority for another person to collect an assessment task on their behalf.
- Review and act on feedback received on assessment tasks. Feedback methods may include notations on assessment tasks, in-class/online discussion, feedback posted electronically discussing the strengths and weaknesses of students’ answers generically, or sample answers for the assessment task.
- If clarification is required regarding the mark or grade awarded for an assessment task, consult with the Lecturer in Charge or other relevant staff member promptly after their receipt. The Lecturer in Charge may refer the student to the person who undertook the assessment of the work.
- Retain returned written work.
- Students will not be allowed to resubmit work in order to gain a higher grade unless the provision of draft assignments is stipulated in the Unit Outline.
|
Seeking an extension for submission of an assessment task |

Appeal |
If the student wishes to appeal against the grade awarded, proceed in accordance with the Student Appeals Policy. |
