Appendix 1 - English Language Proficiency Requirements
Evidence of English Language proficiency
Students whose first language is not English need to provide evidence of their English language proficiency to enrol in courses at ACU. There are two ways of doing this. Students can provide evidence that they have successfully completed studies where the medium of study was English, or they can provide evidence of their English proficiency.
Students must have achieved the English language proficiency requirements specified in this Appendix no earlier than two years prior to commencement of the course of study to which the student seeks admission.
There are specific English Language proficiency requirements for all ACU courses.
Faculty of Theology and Philosophy, School of Arts, School of Business
To enrol in courses in the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy, the School of Arts and the School of Business, the students whose first language is not English must have either:
- successfully completed at least one full-time year of study in secondary or higher education where the medium of study was English; or
- demonstrated their English proficiency, as set out below.
Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Education, Thomas More Academy of Law
To enrol in courses in the Faculty of Health Sciences, the School of Education and the Thomas More Academy of Law, students whose first language is not English must have either:
- successfully completed at least two full-time years of study in secondary or higher education where the medium of study was English; or
- demonstrated their English proficiency, as set out below.

1The ACU Tertiary Preparation Program (Health Sciences) is acceptable for entry to bachelor degree courses in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
2A TAFE Diploma held by students licensed as enrolled nurses or the Occupational English Test (OET) with a minimum grade of B in every sub-test is acceptable for entry into these courses.
3A student will be required to complete an IELTS test at the prescribed level for registration purposes.
4The applicant must meet the English language requirements of AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) and be registered as a provisional psychologist in order to commence a professional program. If unsure, please contact the relevant postgraduate Course Coordinator for further details.
