1 Identified Honours applicants who fulfil the admission criteria will be invited to enrol into three Honours units (40 cp) in year 3 and 4 and would not be required to complete the 10 cp unit: EDFD457 Action Research as a Reflective Practice, resulting in a 30 cp unit overload (350 cp program). Identified Honours applicants who do not wish to teach in Catholic primary schools may complete the BEd(Pri)(Hon) in 320 cp by utilising existing course electives.
2 These rules apply to students who commenced the course in 2006 or later.
Religious Education and Theology Units: Completion of these units, in addition to giving full State accreditation, allows teachers to satisfy requirements for teaching in Catholic Anglican or Lutheran schools in addition to government and independent schools.
Catholic Schools Accreditation and Catholic Studies: Students who wish to teach in Catholic schools will undertake 30 cp in Theology units in the Basic Accreditation Strand and 20 cp in Religious Education. A major in Catholic Studies (CS) of 80 cp with 60 cp in Theology and 20 cp in Religious Education is available for students who wish to pursue study in Theology and Religious Education in more depth. Students not seeking accreditation to teach in Catholic, Anglican or Lutheran schools study alternative and/or elective units.
Anglican Strand: (QUEENSLAND ONLY) Students who wish to complete the requirements for teaching in Anglican schools must register and enrol with St Francis Theological College as well as with ACU. Two Anglican units (20 cp) will replace Catholic theology units in the Bachelor of Education course and ACU will credit these Anglican units towards the completion of the degree. Students undertaking the Anglican strand will complete two Anglican Theology units (C52072 and C52053), one Theology unit (THCT202) and two Religious Education units (EDRE101 and EDRE102) with ACU.
Lutheran Strand: (Queensland and Victoria) Students who wish to complete the requirements for teaching in Lutheran schools must register and enrol with Australian Lutheran College as well as with ACU. Four Lutheran units (40 cp) will replace Catholic Theology and Religious Education units in the Bachelor of Education course and ACU will credit these Lutheran units towards the completion of the degree.
Requirements for working with children: All students enrolled must have the appropriate approvals before they may enter a classroom. These are: Blue Card (Qld), Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) or Working with Children Check (NSW and Vic). International students must bring police check documentation from their own countries. To meet the requirements for working in settings other than schools, a National Police check may be required. Australian students who have lived in another country for 12 months or more must provide a police check from that country for that period.
3 Community engagement will be integrated across the program with links made to appropriate units. This will be a feature of the program and formally tracked and recorded. (These units do not attract credit point weightings or involve HECS liability or use of Student Learning Entitlement.)
4 Students completing the Honours degree will graduate with the Bachelor of Education (Primary) with Honours.
5 To qualify for admission into the Honours stream, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 6.0 in years one and two of the course.
6 Students who seek to teach in Catholic primary schools will be required to overload an additional 30 cp in Religious Education accreditation units.
7 The Bachelor of Educational Studies is not a teaching qualification.
10 A Catholic Studies Minor satisfies the minimum requirements for entry to the Master of Arts (Theology).
- After completing THBS100 Introduction to the Bible and THCT100 What Christians Believe, students may elect to complete either the Catholic Studies Minor/Major Strand or the Basic Accreditation Strand.
- THEO228 The Christian Life: Worship and Ethics is incompatible with both THCT202 Christian Symbol, Ritual and Sacrament and THCP203 Christian Theological Ethics, and cannot be credited towards a Catholic Studies Minor or Major.
13 For ACT, Qld and Vic. Students in NSW must take one of the Creative Arts electives instead of EDAR422.
14 Compulsory in NSW; elective in other states, if available.
15 For Qld the 20 cp Internship unit may be used to replace EDFD457 and EDFD458.
16 This unit is only offered to students completing the CEO/ACU Special Education Immersion Project.
17 NSW Teacher-regulatory entry requirements must be met.
19Students who complete a 40 cp Thesis will be eligible to progress directly to PhD studies.
20Community engagement will be integrated across the program with links made to appropriate units. This will be a feature of the program and fromally tracked and recorded. (These units do not attract credit point weighting or involve HECS liability or use of Student Learning Entitlement.)
