8. Personal circumstances affecting assessment

8.1 Permanent disability and/or long term chronic illness


8.1.1 Students with a permanent disability and/or long term medical condition should consult a Disability Adviser within the Equity and Disability Unit to develop an Education Inclusion Plan (EIP) that sets out any necessary adjustments1.


8.1.2 Such students can also apply for special consideration, over and above any adjustments that may already have been approved in an EIP if they meet the relevant criteria.

8.2 Extension of time for submission of an assessment task


Students experiencing personal circumstances or temporary illness that significantly hamper(s) their participation or performance in an assessment task may apply to the Lecturer in Charge for an extension of time for submission of an assessment task in accordance with the Assessment Procedures.

8.3 Special examination arrangements


Students who experience an unexpected temporary disability, medical condition or other exceptional circumstances beyond their control may apply for a deferred examination or examination adjustment, in accordance with the Examination Policy and Procedures – Students.

8.4 Deferred examinations


Students who are unable to attend, or complete, a scheduled examination because of illness or exceptional circumstances beyond their control may apply to sit a deferred examination(s) in accordance with the Examination Policy and Procedures – Students 2.

8.5 Other circumstances warranting special consideration


8.5.1 Students experiencing personal circumstances which significantly hamper their participation or performance in an assessment task or examination may apply for special consideration3 where other processes are not applicable or are no longer possible because of the timing and/or severity of the circumstance(s).  Such circumstances include –

8.5.2 Applications will be assessed taking into account a student’s individual circumstances and how they may affect academic progress.

8.5.3 Where an application for special consideration is approved, students will be given an additional opportunity to meet the learning outcomes being assessed in the relevant assessment task or examination.

4 In the case of a Defence Reservist or Emergency Services personnel, written confirmation from the Defence Reserve or recognised Emergency Services organisation regarding the nature (compulsory or voluntary) and duration of the service or other activity is required.
