Bachelor of Social Science

The Bachelor of Social Science delivered exclusively at CIHE, is a one year top-up program specifically designed for graduates of the Associate of Social Science in Social Work (ASSSW) of CIHE or equivalent. More information on this course can be found at Bachelor of Social Science (Hong Kong).

EFTSL value of units: All 10 cp units in this course have an EFTSL value of 0.125. Units with a cp value of a multiple of 10 have corresponding EFTSL values.

1. Admission Requirements1

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites at year 12, or equivalent:

Queensland
Prerequisites: English (4, SA)

Victoria
Prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.

2. Definitions

"Major": 80 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, including at least 10 cp at introductory level and at least 60 cp at advanced level.

"Minor": 40 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, including at least 10 cp at introductory level and at least 20 cp at advanced level.

"Specialisation": An area of special or focused study or sub-discipline within a course, which is recognised on the student's testamur and transcript. Normally a specialisation consists of not less than one-half of the total credit points required for the award.

3. Requirements for Completion of the Degree

To qualify for the Pass degree, a student must complete 240 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:

  1. 10 cp from the Core Unit;
  2. 80 cp from the Sociology Major;
  3.  
    1. 80 cp from a non-APAC accredited Psychology Major; or
    2. 2 Minors from Australian Studies, Counselling, Economics, Family Studies, Politics, Psychology or Youth Work;
  4. 20 cp from Program Core units2;
  5. up to 50 cp from Electives.

4. Requirements for Completion of a Specialisation

A student may complete a Specialisation in Psychology in accordance with the following requirements from the Schedule of Unit Offerings:

  1. 10 cp from the Core Unit;
  2. 80 cp from the Sociology Major;
  3. 120 cp from the APAC accredited Specialisation in Psychology;
  4. 20 cp from Program Core Units2;
  5. 10 cp from Electives.

1 A student must also comply with the Admission Rules.
2 Where relevant, a Program Core unit may contribute to a major or minor sequence in the cognate discipline.
3 40 cp granted for successful completion of a National Training Information Service (NTIS) Community Services Package from an accredited RTO or equivalent as formally recognised through an articulation agreement with Australian Catholic University.
4 To satisfy the requirements of an Australian Psychology Accreditation council (APAC) three year sequence in Psychology, students must complete all ten units listed for this major.
5 Students who complete PSYC206 Research Design and Statistics 2 and PSYC311 Research Design and Statistics 3 will not be required to undertake the Sociology core units SOCS207 Qualitative Sociological Research Methods and SOCS237 Quantitative Sociological Research Methods. Instead these two core units will be replaced with two Sociology electives.
