APIS202 Islam in Western Scholarship

Prerequisites APIS100 Introduction to Islam or equivalent
Teaching Organisation 12 week semester or equivalent in intensive block mode. This unit is equivalent to 150 hours of focused learning. These may include lectures, seminars and workshops, and mixed modes.
The unit aims to provide students with a basic introduction to non-Muslim scholarship of Islam. This will include works from both the pre-modern and the modern periods. An analysis of the main approaches of these works, and of their similarities and differences, will be presented. The unit also aims to show how the literature about Islam generated by scholars in the West affected the Western mind and Western societies in understanding Islam. Comparisons are drawn with the literature on Islam that has appeared in Muslim societies.
