10 cp

High quality early childhood programs support the young childrens holistic development and establish strong foundations for their continuing success as lifelong learners. This unit introduces the early childhood context and critically examines the principles and perspectives underpinning contemporary early childhood play based curriculum. Pedagogy that actively engages children in play and other worthwhile contexts for learning is critically considered from multiple perspectives and used as the framework to explore the integrative nature of professional skills of observation and documentation, relationships and provisions for learning. The unit uses a critical learning paradigm that is consistent with the ACU Mission. It promotes a holistic view of the young child and engenders respect for human dignity through an inclusive play based curriculum. This unit includes the three modules Introduction to Early Childhood Environments, Play, Development and Learning and Observation and Documentation Multiple Lenses and Frameworks. These modules will involve the application of developmental and socio-cultural learning theory to the observation of and interactions with children as individuals and as members of collaborative groups. Preservice early childhood and primary educators will explore a range of theoretical and curriculum frameworks and how these frameworks inform the content and processes of observation and planning for play and learning in early childhood settings. Concepts and skills introduced in this unit will be implemented during the guided field experience and the block practicum in a setting for children 0-2 years.
