Students may choose elective units in Early Childhood or Catholic Studies or, subject to Course Coordinator approval, units from the Schedule of Unit Offerings in courses offered by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

1A student must also comply with the Admission Rules.

2These rules apply to students who commenced the course in 2006 or later.

Religious Education and Theology Units: Completion of these units, in addition to giving full State accreditation, allows teachers to satisfy requirements for teaching in Catholic or Lutheran schools and State schools.

Catholic Schools Accreditation and Catholic Studies: Students who wish to teach in Catholic schools will undertake 30 cp in Theology units in the Scripture, Theology and Church Life (STCL) strand and 20 cp in Religious Education. A major in Catholic Studies (CS) of 80 cp with 60 cp in Theology and 20 cp in Religious Education is available for students who wish to pursue that option.

Students not seeking accreditation to teach in Catholic or Lutheran schools study alternative and/or elective units.

Lutheran Strand: Students who wish to complete the requirements for teaching in Lutheran schools must register and enrol with Australian Lutheran College as well as with Australian Catholic University. Five Lutheran units (50 cp) will replace Catholic Theology and Religious Education units in the Bachelor of Education course and Australian Catholic University will credit these Lutheran units towards the completion of the degree.

Early Childhood Education Specialisation (40 cp): (QUEENSLAND ONLY) Students who are interested in the Early Childhood Education specialisation should enrol in Early Childhood Education 1 and 2, which are offered in years 2 and 3 of the course, as their elective units. At the end of year 3, students must apply to the Course Co-ordinator to continue in the specialisation.

Requirements for working with children: All students enrolled must have the appropriate approvals before they may enter a classroom. These are: Blue Card (Queensland), Working with Children Background Check (ACT, Victoria, NSW). International students should check this with the Course Co-ordinator and may need to bring documentation from their own countries.

3 Community engagement will be integrated across the program with links made to appropriate units. This will be a feature of the program and formally tracked and recorded. (These units do not attract credit point weightings nor involve payment of fees.)

4 Not available in Victoria.

5 Available in Victoria only.

6 A Catholic Studies Minor satisfies the minimum requirements for postgraduate study in Theology.

7 For ACT, Queensland and Victoria. Students in NSW must take one of the Creative Arts electives instead of EDAR422.

8 Compulsory in NSW; elective in other states.
