ACU Funded Research Higher Degree

ACU funds Research Higher Degree students for the maximum regulation term of study. After this time has lapsed, candidates who have not completed their research degrees will be required to pay tuition fees, as set by the University Research and Research Training Committee (URRTMC). note: funding does not refer to coursework components of the combined Master of Psychology/Doctor of Philosophy degree. Students must pay Library fees. Some students may be eligible for RTS places. Continuation of Candidature is dependent upon the candidate adhering to Research Higher Degree Regulations and maintaining satisfactory academic progress. This is monitored twice annually with the completion of a mandatory Academic Progress Report whereby the candidate and Principal/Co-Supervisors agree on the student's progress.

Postgraduate Research Scholarships for Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents

Applications are welcomed for the following awards:

1. ACU Postgraduate Awards (ACUPA) with stipend. This is an ACU Award based on competitive academic results from an Australian university or equivalent qualification from a recognised overseas university.
2. Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) with stipend. This is a Commonwealth Government Award based on competitive academic results. APA applicants must hold First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent to apply from an Australian university or from a recognised overseas university.

Postgraduate Research Scholarships for International Students

Applications are welcomed from international students for the following postgraduate award:

1. Endeavour Scholarships are awarded for research study and cover the full tuition costs only. The awards are normally for three years. Applications are open to citizens of all overseas countries (except New Zealand), who are commencing full-time research in the year following application, for a higher degree by research. Successful applicants will also receive a stipend from ACU to assist with living costs.

Eligibility and Application Process

Candidates apply for a Scholarship on the standard Candidature Application form.

Applications for an APA with stipend must be Australian citizens or have permanent resident status and must have lived in Australia continuously for the 12 months prior to the closing date of applications (31 October). A student who is unable to undertake full-time postgraduate study for compelling personal reasons (excluding employment) may be eligible to be considered for a part-time APA with stipend. The compelling personal reasons must be documented at the time of application.

Deadlines

Applications close on 31 October. Decisions regarding Postgraduate Research Scholarships are normally made at the end of each calendar year. Late or incomplete applications cannot be accepted.

Fees

Australian and New Zealand citizens and permanent residents undertaking Research Higher Degrees, except the Master of Philosophy Preliminary Program, are provided with an Australian Catholic University Research Tuition Assistance Scholarship which is equivalent to a full fee-paying place. Some students may be eligible for RTS places.

International students who are not awarded an Endeavour Scholarship pay full international tuition fees.

Additional Information

Candidates are admitted to undertake one of these research degrees in a field of study which has been broadly identified in the Universitys Research Management Strategy as an area of strength:

- Early Christian Literature;
- Education Leadership;
- Health Care: Exercise Science, Midwifery, Nursing and Palliative Care;
- Lifelong Learning;
- Mathematics Education;
- Religion Studies and Religious Education;
- Social Sciences, especially Social Work and Youth Studies;
- Teaching and Learning;
- Mission Focus: Church History, Church Music, Ethics, Philosophy, Psychology, Sacred Scripture, Spirituality and Theology.

Candidates may also be accepted in other fields where there exists a demonstrated capacity for research supervision.

Research degree students are accepted and enrolled in a Faculty of the University and may also be associated with a research centre or institute.

Master of Philosophy Preliminary Program

This program is intended for applicants who wish to study at masters level but do not meet the entry requirements. There is no degree awarded for this preliminary program, which is available at all campuses, either full-time or part-time, for a maximum of 2 semesters (FT) or 4 semesters (PT).

It is expected that applicants will already hold a bachelors degree or equivalent and have completed studies relevant to their field of interest.

International applicants are not eligible for entry to this program.
