In this unit students will consider the significance of Jesus Christ in today’s cultural context. The unit begins with the New Testament witness to Jesus, his work and mission, and then investigates the emergence of christological confessions and creeds in the early Church. In the context of the history of christological reflection a number of current christologies are examined.

This unit explores the ecclesial tradition of the Church from New Testament to modern times. It introduces students to the relevant historical, social and theological contexts and themes of Catholic ecclesiology and highlights the insights of the Second Vatican Council. Students are provided with the opportunity of exploring contemporary ecclesial issues with regard to the local and universal Church from an ecumenical perspective.

This unit examines contemporary theologies of social critique. It explores the philosophical and sociological foundations of critical feminist, political and liberation theology and seeks to articulate how these are situated within contemporary Christian discourse. The principle of God’s identification with the poor and marginalised is explored in the scriptures, church teaching and contemporary theologies and attention is given to the critical engagement of the prophetic values of justice, mercy and peace. Political, liberation and feminist approaches to theology are investigated in terms of their claim to provide an effective hermeneutic of social transformation to enhance the contemporary communication of the Gospel.

This unit introduces students to the various missionary theologies that have inspired Christian ministry and praxis throughout the Christian era. The biblical foundations and historical expressions of mission, especially in modern times, are reviewed. Official church documents focussing on inculturation and the Church's missionary vocation are studied. There is emphasis on the formulation of a theology of mission in the context of ecumenism, pluralism, secularisation, globalisation and other significant social movements.

It examines how literature and the arts foster the search for truth, beauty and goodness in the midst of suffering, and critique society and inform a social conscience. Students will explore how various forms of literature and the arts relate to theology and consider conditions and contexts that favour a fruitful interaction between the art of theology and the literary, visual and expressive arts.

Teaching and learning strategies chosen from the following: lectures and tutorials; directed research and readings; experiential learning in class settings; interdependent learning group strategies; reflective practice by participants; guest lecturers representing 'other' traditions.
This unit introduces students to the field of religious pluralism with particular focus on Christian dialogue with major world religions. Indigenous and humanistic traditions may also be included. Theological issues and strategies for dialogue are explored. The goal of the unit is to formulate a coherent Christian theology of religious pluralism in the context of interfaith dialogue and post-modern sensibility towards the 'other'.

This unit views the notion of reconciliation through a number of lenses. A scriptural overview of reconciliation is given. The unit also provides an overview of reconciliation in the teaching and practice of the Christian churches. Distinct processes of personal and social reconciliation are outlined. There is specific focus on reconciliation in the Australian context. Christian theologies and spiritualities of reconciliation are described in relation to strategies which promote the ministry of reconciliation. Finally, reconciliation is studied under its diverse liturgical forms.

This unit will examine traditions of spiritual guidance, spiritual direction and spiritual companioning within Christianity. The study will include inquiry into models of spiritual discernment from biblical to contemporary times with special emphasis on each model’s theology, focus and process. A variety of traditions and types of prayer will be explored. Students will develop skills that assist them to evaluate critically these traditions and to understand how these foundations inform the ministry of spiritual direction.

Teaching Organisation 2 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent. The unit may be offered on-campus and online. This unit will include lectures, seminars, case studies, role plays, practical experience in spiritual direction, verbatims, individual and group supervision.
This unit draws together the foundations, history, theology and skills developed in the first three units with the experience of being a spiritual director. There will be a concentration on developing skills and personal resources in direction. A supervised experience at a retreat centre and direction with three directees will be central to the learning process.

The unit explores the fundamental religious and theological questions arising from the challenges of the empirical sciences. To that purpose it addresses the following six sets of terms, singly, and taken together in larger connecting contexts; astronomy and the doctrine of creation; quantum physics and the nature of reality; evolution and continuing creation; genetics, neuroscience and human nature; the laws of nature and the activity of God; the promise of nature and eschatology. It also compares and contrasts the distinctive methods by which science, theology and religion arrive at their respective conclusions.
