SWTP612 Critical Evaluation in the Human Services
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation Students will participate in the equivalent of 24 hours class time in a semester in a range of face-to-face and flexible-delivery approaches.
Evaluation has become an essential component of practice in the human services sector. Shifts in the economy of social welfare have meant practitioners need skills to evaluate their work. This unit critically examines the practice of evaluation within the changing social policy context that demands from practitioners and organisations information about outcomes and ‘evidence’ of good practice. The unit will focus on the changing environment where welfare organisations confront multiple and often contradictory goals. Evaluation may be regarded as a device for financial and ideological control or it can be used as way of developing skills in making judgements about ‘good’ practice and for influencing change. This unit will examine the context within which practice is carried out and focus on developing the research skills needed to utilise evaluation techniques. It considers the skills required to design new programs and evaluate process and outcomes in existing programs and services, and examines the techniques available to evaluate individual practice.

SWTP614 Gender Issues in the Human Services
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation Students will participate in the equivalent of 24 hours class time in a semester in a range of face-to-face and flexible-delivery approaches.
Gender influences not only the way workers respond in practice but also informs the development of services which are gender specific, such as women’s refuges and men’s counselling services. The purpose of this course is to critically examine how feminist theories inform the development of human services work. The application of a number of feminist theories can be identified at all levels of practice - individual, group, community work, policy, research and management. The purpose of this unit is to explore in particular two aspects of feminist practice: groupwork and management.
Feminist practice is a creative and challenging aspect of contemporary human services work. Feminist perspectives have been influential in a number of areas including family violence, child protection, mental health, working with youth, disability services as well as in the provision of services to men and boys.
