This unit addresses issues of knowledge development and the history, methods and processes of nursing and midwifery research. Ways to search, read and interpret relevant literature are explored, along with approaches to analysis and synthesis of literature as a preparatory step in writing a literature review for a proposed research study.

This clinical practice unit focuses on the development of comprehensive skills of advanced clinical assessment. The purpose of the unit is to enable the student to develop an advanced capability in the holistic assessment of patients/clients. The unit aims to enhance significantly the student’s assessment skills and ability to provide comprehensive and accurate descriptions of their observations and findings using appropriate terminology, and to formulate and communicate clinical diagnoses.

This clinical practice unit focuses on the evaluation and application of evidence to practice. The purpose of the unit is to enable students to develop an advanced capability to assess clinical practice situations and to evaluate and apply relevant evidence. Students will develop an enhanced ability to appraise all forms of evidence, including formal and informal sources of information, and to formulate clinical judgements relevant to their clinical context.

This unit aims to develop and expand the students’ knowledge, understanding and practice of clinical decision-making in nursing. Theoretical and practical aspects of clinical decision-making are considered in the context of nursing and interdisciplinary health care professional practice. Approaches to advanced clinical nursing assessment of physical and mental health status, and factors influencing the accuracy of assessment data and possible implications for nursing practice, will be considered.

This unit will provide students with opportunities to explore and critique current trends in various areas of specialty nursing practice. Key issues will be identified through literature search and information derived from professional experience in the field. Aspects of the concurrent health care context as background will enable critical analysis of the roles, relationships and interactions of health service personnel, consumers of services, and formulation of profiles for provision of care through specialty services for individuals and groups.

This unit will provide opportunities to examine current approaches to the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies in leadership practices. Participants will have the opportunity to explore aspects of self and relationships in the contexts of their practice. Analysis and debate of issues of importance to the development of leadership skills and leadership behaviours in nursing will be undertaken. Various innovative strategies and skills for effective and authentic leadership will be developed and evaluated.

This unit enables students to explore, clarify, and examine the nature of cultural phenomena in regard to caring, caring with cultures, the similarities and differences, and the significance of culture in nursing and health care practice. Factors influencing how people from diverse cultural backgrounds experience and respond to health and illness will be considered against a background of transcultural nursing theory and research. Approaches to, and imperatives for, caring in nursing practice in culturally diverse contexts will be examined with reference to ethical and moral concerns.

This unit examines nursing as an international practice and developing discipline in the global contexts of diverse human needs, provision of various health care services, and different economic, social, political, and geographic contexts. The importance of appraising nursing practice in different community, regional, and national contexts will be considered.Current and emerging issues in nursing across national and cultural boundaries will be critically examined. Differences associated with local, regional, and national contexts of nursing education and practice will be highlighted.

The study is undertaken with a staff mentor appointed by the relevant Head of School. Participants should have successfully completed six units including core units before they undertake a unit of independent study.

Ways to shape, support and, where indicated, change health care structures and services where indicated will be critically examined.

Research questions, research design, and research methods for qualitative data collection and analysis will be examined. The use of a variety of structured and unstructured approaches will be explored and issues of rigour and credibility will be addressed. Research proposal and report writing will be included.

This unit aims to develop students’ ability to use quantitative research methods in the context of health related research. Approaches to descriptive and inferential statistical methods will be discussed, as well as issues of validity and reliability. Research proposal and report writing will be included.

This unit will provide an opportunity to explore issues and theories in relation to the management of resources, especially in health care service organisations. Physical, human and financial resource management principles and practices will be critically examined. Participants will be encouraged to develop strategies and skills to maximise the allocation and use of resources, and enhance ethical, moral and legal accountability. Measures and indicators of effective resource management will be critically appraised for relevance to health service organisations and delivery of quality care.

An examination of the role of nutrition in relation to the human body, including types of food, their physiological importance, the nature of food processing and how it can alter nutritional value, food additives, dietary standards, the role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of disease, the consequences of poor nutrition, and the relationship between physiological state and nutrition.
