NRSG221 Towards a Midwife Self

Teaching Organisation 20 hours of practical laboratory, 160 hours of midwifery practice per semester.
This practice unit will assist students to build on skills obtained in previous semesters in working with a variety of women experiencing childbearing, in a variety of settings. In particular this unit will assist students to immerse themselves in the midwifery context and culture in order to develop a critique of self in practice. Students will be encouraged to develop a sense of self as a beginning midwife, with an understanding of their actions, attitudes, beliefs and values, and how these form a dialectical relationship with action in practice. To assist understanding of the sense of self as a midwife, students will be expected to engage with a minimum of ten women in order to ‘follow through’ to six weeks after their baby is born. Students will take responsibility (under guidance) for working as ‘named’ midwife with a minimum of ten women.

Health care practice occurs within increasingly diverse and complex environments with the law and professional processes seeking to ensure the quality of such practice. These legal and professional processes are based on a belief in the inherent dignity and worth of every person and the desire for the common good, which is a particular focus of this unit. Furthermore, the topics explored in this unit are underpinned by a concern for all people, especially those considered less fortunate and those vulnerable to exploitation. For health care practitioners, an increased awareness and knowledge of the legal and professional systems provides protection for those in their care, and promotes a spirit of justice while facilitating expansion of the health care practitioner’s role.

Students will have an opportunity to apply theory to specialty nursing practice in a range of clinical settings.

The focus of this unit is to prepare students to successfully pursue their academic nursing studies, using effective English Language communication skills. Within this unit, opportunities will be provided for students to develop and extend specific academic skills related to the Bachelor of Nursing Program. Using a Lifelong learning approach, the emphasis of the unit will be on developing students’ self-directedness as well as their generic transferable skills. These academic skills, will act as a foundation for subsequent nursing academic studies, and encourage students to participate effectively in their future professional careers. Particular attention will be given to oral interaction, writing for academic purposes, report writing and reflective practice. Throughout this unit, students will be given the opportunity to develop their skills in time and resource management, as well as information and computer literacy. Students will also be introduced to critical thinking skills and working in groups.

This unit aims to provide students with an experience of different cultural and health practices and services in a host country. A primary health care approach provides the framework for viewing and interpreting this learning experience. Students will reflect upon their observations and interactions with health care providers and their clients to compare with their experiences of the Australian health care system and health practices. Preparation for this experience will include exploration and discussion of the cultural variations and key health issues and priorities of the host country.
NRSG229 Introduction to Complementary Nursing Therapy

This unit explores the history, philosophy, theory and practices of complementary therapy modalities, analyses the significance of complementary therapies in modern health care and examines the relationship between nursing and complementary therapies from historical, theoretical and practical perspectives. The unit will provide the opportunity for students to develop beginning skills for the utilisation of complementary therapies – theory and practice – in nursing practice.

This unit will extend previous knowledge of culture, family, health belief systems and health practices. Students will develop an understanding of the influence of culture on health beliefs and practices in different cultures. The importance of transcultural nursing, cultural competent care, cultural assessment, and communicating effectively with clients and families who come from a different cultural and linguistic backgrounds will be explored in this unit. Opportunity will also be provided for students to select one particular culture for specific study of health patterns and health care practices.

Global factors influence individual, community and population health. The influence of these factors is often not easily recognised, analysed or modified. This unit aims to raise students’ awareness of global factors that influence health, assist them to recognise this impact and compensate for these factors where they cannot be modified directly.
NRSG234 Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine

This unit will introduce students to the history, development, philosophy and concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Students will be able to understand how particular understandings of the human body, health, and illness can determine different, contradictory, and complementary assessment and treatment approaches in the practice of TCM. Students will also be able to examine the role of the nurse and their scope of practice, determined by their regulatory authority, in relation to practicing in an environment in which TCM may or may not be integrated with Western medicine. Additionally, students will be able to determine how concepts from TCM can be integrated into their personal and professional nursing practice.

This unit will introduce students to strategies to promote healthy musculoskeletal functioning in individuals and groups. It provides the opportunity for students to examine the orthopaedic specialty nursing knowledge and skills that underpin nursing care of clients with disorders of the musculoskeletal system within the context of acute care. Students will explore the impact of congenital, developmental and acquired disorders of the musculoskeletal system on people of all ages. The unit will also focus on the preventative management of common musculoskeletal health problems.

This unit provides an opportunity for the student to develop an appreciation of the positive reciprocal relationships that health professionals can develop through engaging with members of a local, national or international community. Through a volunteer role at a selected agency, the student will be able to learn about the role of community agencies and assist them in supporting individuals and families experiencing long term health and social justice issues. For the student, this unit provides a vehicle to experience and develop the values of partnership, trust, equality, mutual respect and commitment that are inherent in ethical community engagement.

In addition, utilisation of clinical decision-making skills will enable students to develop nursing care for those who experience alterations in the associated functional health patterns. Students will also have the opportunity to reflect critically on the influence that health promotion has on the person, family and community in a variety of contexts. This unit explores spirituality from multiple views including Eastern, Western Indigenous, Christian and secular perspectives. Students will examine spirituality in the contexts of health care for the human person in states of health and illness. The role of the health professional is examined using own life experiences and self-reflection to articulate a personal meaning of spirituality. Spiritual needs, spiritual distress, spiritual practices and the role of the health professional are addressed.
NRSG245 Therapeutics in Midwifery

This unit will explore both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies used in midwifery practice. Pharmacological principles will be introduced together with a study of commonly used drugs throughout the childbearing process such as analgesics, antimicrobials, oxytocics and tocolytics. The use and safety of drugs during pregnancy, the post-partuperial and breastfeeding will be a unifying focus. Non-pharmacological therapies such as complementary and alternative medicines, massage, aromatherapy, musical therapy and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) will be identified as useful therapies for midwifery practice. Use of water for labour and birth will also be addressed.

This unit builds upon content introduced in Contexts of Paramedicine 1 by introducing clinical skills and the principles of documentation through integrating the content of NRSG123 Contexts of Nursing 2 into a paramedical perspective.
Students will develop an understanding of birthing and the impact of illness upon the person, family and community from a holistic perspective. Application of critical thinking strategies will enable students to develop a person-centred approach to those requiring care in a variety of paramedic settings. Knowledge of health promotion will be applied across the lifespan.

This unit provides an opportunity for students to enhance their understanding and care of people who have dementia, whether they are in acute, community, or residential care. Students will develop an increased awareness of the complex interaction between factors that can lead to symptoms of dementia, as well as the psychological and social needs of people with dementia. With this awareness, students will be able to plan and facilitate person-centred care that will contribute to the health and well-being of people with dementia, despite their cognitive impairment.
