Repertoire to be chosen from the following areas: (1) lieder: a major song cycle (or part thereof), or a contrasting group of songs from Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Franz, Wolf, Strauss, Reger, Mahler, Liszt, Wagner, Loewe, Rubinstein, Pfitzner and Marx, (2) opera: Arias from the works of 17th to 20th century composers, (3) oratorio: arias from the works of 17th to 20th century composers or arias from Bach cantatas, (4) French: selections from the works of Gounod, Debussy, Berlioz, Duparc, Poulenc, Ravel, Faure and Chausson, (5) art song: 20th–century art song from any country sung in English or the original language. Teaching Organisation The student is required to direct a choir external to the University. This may be a church, school or community choir, or may be a group formed to travel to locations as required. The choir must rehearse under the direction of the student for at least 2 hours per week over 2 semesters, or equivalent.
The choral-training practicum provides experience in choral direction of a choir external to the University, and integrates the skills acquired in previous Choral Conducting units and in the Campus Choir. Continuing membership of and satisfactory participation in the activities of the Campus Choir over a period of two semesters provides additional experience in ensemble and skills, and exposure to further repertoire. Activities include weekly rehearsals and at least one major performance each semester, as well as occasional liturgies or performances at University functions.

A study of up to two selected topics chosen from the following discipline areas in historical and systematic musicology: aesthetics of music, music criticism and music analysis. Topics to be investigated will be negotiated according to staff availability and student demand, and will be chosen from the following broad areas: (i) a study of selected writings of the philosophy of music from antiquity to the present day, (ii) a study of selected theoretical and historical writings on music criticism and critical writings on music, including journalistic criticism, (iii) a study of selected approaches to analysis applied to a variety of musical styles, using analytical techniques such as structural, functional, formal, thematic, stylistic, semiotic, paradigmatic approaches, and set theory.

An advanced study of compositional techniques, including the preparation and presentation of a folio of at least two original compositions for differing musical forces totalling 15-20 minutes (vocal, choral, instrumental or computer generated) and a presentation at a performance workshop of one of the works. The compositions should be written in different genres, scoring and idioms and should take account of the performing forces available to the composer and feedback provided by performers in workshops. Compositions involving synthetically produced sound, for example film soundtracks and incidental music for drama, may be included.

A study of the history, sources, notation, and forms of Western Plainchant, as a theoretical background for an informed method of chant performance. A critical approach to chant editions will be developed by examining the restoration of chant since the late nineteenth century, the various schools of performance, and the controversies surrounding these.

A study of the aesthetics of music with particular reference to the realm of the sacred. Students will examine the ways in which music can communicate meaning, either alone, or in association with other forms of art. Aspects to be studied will include: value judgements in music, music and emotion, music and the experience of God, music and beauty, music and ritual.
