The pervasive nature of financial information and its use in decision-making, make it imperative that all managers who work, or will work, in organisations with limited financial resources, acquire a degree of financial literacy. This unit is concerned with fulfilling those managerial tasks directed to the financing, investing and operating activities of an enterprise in ways consistent with the objective of the enterprise. The course deals with these tasks in the context of the corporate environment, although much of the content is applicable to the not-for-profit sector also. Managers, at various times, have the tasks of obtaining finance for the enterprise by raising new equity capital, retaining profits within the entity, or borrowing on long term markets; using finance raised for investment in working capital assets, evaluating the returns from long-term assets, and evaluating performance of the resources once allocated; planning and controlling the flows of funds and of cash within the organisation; and analysing the financial statements prepared on management’s behalf for taking decisions to correct past errors or chart future directions.

This unit takes a critical perspective of human resource management and examines the claims of the discipline that it makes a positive strategic contribution to the achievement of corporate objectives of an organisation. Every organisation faces challenges from continuous and discontinuous change and the contribution of HRM can be vital to organisational success. This unit explores differing theoretical/ideological perspectives of HRM. The content presented builds on previous generalist/functional HRM knowledge and practical skills gained from other HRM studies and experience. The unit will analyse organisational needs, pressures for change and ethical implications that are linked to these pressures.

This unit examines the ways in which an understanding of organisational behaviour is necessary to, and facilitates the management of, people at work. Organisations are examined as dynamic systems. There are three levels of analysis the individual, the group, and the organisation as an entity. The focus is on the internal dynamics of organisations or a “micro level” perspective, although some attention is also given to the “macro” perspective on the role of organisations in the broader social, political and economic environment. The intellectual underpinnings of this unit are based on findings from the behavioural sciences in particular psychology, sociology, anthropology and political science. The study, however, is from a management perspective and consideration is given throughout to issues of efficiency and effectiveness in organisations in both the private and public sectors. Ethical issues that arise in managing organisations will also be considered.

This unit will expose students to the principal concepts and processes of Strategic Management. The inevitable changes in the world environment are creating new opportunities and challenges for the entire business and non-business community. This unit explores the context of strategy in a globalised world, the strategic environment, strategy formulation and issues relating to the implementation of strategy. Participants will have the opportunity to gain the competencies, skills and understanding necessary for formulating, implementing and managing the strategy process that aims to ensure the long term viability and success of an organisation or enterprise. A critical overview is also provided of the various frameworks and models used in strategic analysis. Emphasis will be placed on the inevitability of change in the global environment and the need for strategic thinking and management in the changing environment.

Leadership within the context of Christian leadership must be viewed as a collaboration activity. Leaders at several levels within their organisational context normally exercise responsibility for staff development, achievement of role objectives and motivation towards excellence. Effective leadership requires a discerning mixture of skills, perspectives and approaches. To be successful, leaders require an understanding of the dynamics of human behaviour, including new ways of thinking about one’s own feelings, thoughts and actions as well as those of other people. This is done by addressing some of the major issues confronting people today, including the notions of stability versus change, rationality versus irrationality and the nature-nurture question.

This unit approaches leadership from historical, philosophical, sociological and theological perspectives. Particular attention is given to the nature and operation of power. Collegiality, which has re-emerged as a focus for interdisciplinary thinking by theologians and sociologists, is examined as one of many paradigms for leadership.

The unit helps the students to understand a range of concepts and techniques associated with both qualitative and quantitative methods of research that are applicable for Business and/or Information Systems. The students will be able to evaluate the best method of doing particular types of research and will allow students to apply some of these techniques in workshop activities and projects. Being able to research new areas is an important skill in both Business and Information Systems and the unit will help students understand the methods most applicable to their discipline.

The Research Project involves independent study under supervision. The Research Project is expected to be a substantial piece of research in which a student must demonstrate an ability to conduct an independent research study, making appropriate theoretical connections, and adding to an existing body of knowledge. Each candidate is under the supervision of a member of University staff. Permission must be sought through the Head of School to undertake a Research Project.

For this reason there is general recognition in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors that successful organisational change requires co-ordinated managerial planning, leadership and skill. In the face of this challenge, a new focus for leaders and managers has been emerging. This unit, then, provides leaders and managers with the opportunity to integrate theory and practice with respect to change in the light of contemporary research and reflection upon their own experience.

The major functions and purposes of the HR function are examined against the historical development of HR in Australia and international trends.

This unit is designed to help students develop the skills and attitudes necessary to build confidence in solving problems. To provide students with the skills necessary to solve “real” as opposed to “perceived” problems, they need to be provided with an experience in which they can explore and develop their own thinking and problem-solving skills. The unit takes the perspective of the corporations (business, public, not-for-profit, and voluntary organisations) as well as from the perspective of the business unit. The unit provides a strong managerial application and use approach throughout, focussing content toward a distinctly real-world, global orientation.

This unit provides an overview of organisational dynamics and change management. Its purpose is to offer a theoretical and strategically focused understanding of organisational dynamics incorporating dynamic processes such as decision making, power and politics, organisational communication and conflict management and the implications these have for change management. These concepts are examined incorporating organisational theory and behaviour. Participants are encouraged to take a strategic approach to the management of organisational change using contemporary organisational change theories and practices and determine the links between organisational dynamics and change management.
