The aims of this unit are to revise and develop further the students’ knowledge of the Italian language beyond their year 12 level, both in the range of grammatical features and language skills. Particular focus will be placed on fostering the students’ communicative use of correct Italian, with appropriate attention to relevant contexts, which will include the regular use of authentic texts from the Italian media dealing with socio-cultural and socio-linguistic issues, as well as the study of selected Italian poetry.

This unit is designed to increase the students’ knowledge and use of grammatical features, to expand their level of competence in conversational Italian, both in prepared and unprepared contexts, and to focus on the linguistically and culturally accurate writing in Italian. The formal aspects of grammar will be linked to the use of authentic texts drawn from the printed and audio-visual media, as well as mediated from selected works of classical Italian writers.

The principal aims of this unit are to recycle some of the main linguistic elements covered in the previous two units, to build on these towards the understanding and practical applications of more complex grammatical and syntactical aspects, and to provide regular practice for students to continue developing their conversational and writing proficiency. This practice will be linked to regular e-mail and chat-room correspondence with pen-pals in Italy, as well as the regular reading and discussing of selected literary works and the presentation of socio-cultural and socio-linguistic aspects of Italian life, derived from the use of the Italian printed and broadcasting media.

This unit is designed to take the students’ formal study of Italian into the advanced area of the Italian grammar and syntax, by means of formal explanations and by encouraging students to present selected grammatical segments to the rest of the group themselves, in order to foster a deeper and more involved approach to grammatical features. Students will be offered the opportunity to keep advancing their level of conversational fluency by their interaction with exchange students from Italian universities. Their writing practice will include regular correspondence with Italian pen-pals and with members of their employing organisations. The socio-cultural and socio-linguistic input will continue by means of the students’ preparation and presentation of materials drawn from the Italian printed and broadcasting media and from selected literary texts.

The principal linguistic aim of this unit is to extend the students’ formal understanding and accurate use of further grammatical and syntactical areas of the Italian language. The communicative aims are to provide further opportunities, both during class time and outside it, for students to refine their conversational interactions with native speakers of Italian, such as exchange university students from Italy and members of organisations, both in Italy and in Australia, where Italian is one of the main mode of communication. This unit will have as a new feature a larger component of Italian political and artistic history, which will be researched and delivered by the students themselves, accessing a vast array of printed and online resources.

The aim of this unit is to further extend the elements - linguistic, historical, artistic and literary - of the previous unit. The linguistic elements will include some grammatical features which are particularly relevant to the research and presentation of historical and artistic events and figures – for example the formation and use of the historical past tense and of the subjunctive. A more prominent place will be devoted to the literary input, with the study of selected ‘canti’ from Dante Alighieri’s ‘Divina Commedia’, and the related issue of the formation and spread across Italy, of the Italian language. This unit will introduce the study of a range of issues about modern Italy, particularly those affecting young people.

This unit is designed to continue the development of the students’ understanding of linguistic elements by linking their implementation to the research, delivery and discussion of aspects of the socio-cultural milieu of modern Italian life, such as the issues related to the phenomenon of immigration and of how Italian institutions and political parties are responding to them. The historical and literary input will continue, focussing on 20th century events and on the major Italian playwrights. The artistic input will include an overview of Italian cinema from the period of neo-realism to today, an overview of Italian opera and pop music productions. Students will be encouraged to access related local events, such as the annual festival of Italian films.

The main aim of this unit is to revise the principal linguistic elements covered in all the previous 7 units, by offering both grammatical and communicative practice, with particular reference to the fields of the student’s likely employment, such as the teaching profession for Education students, and a variety of other professions for B.A. students. A dominant feature of this unit will be the involvement of students in research projects in settings where Italian is used by means of a series of individual and group presentations, making extensive use of ICT. A special socio-linguistic feature will be the study of the changes that the Italian language has undergone during the last decades, with particular focus on the sectorial language used by young people. The literary input will focus of the written production by Italian Australian writers.

This is a foundational unit for students with little or no previous Japanese language studies and gives a grounding in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Vocabulary and grammar are introduced in lectures and reinforced by exercises. Accuracy and fluency will provide the basis for learners to acquire a well-balanced communication ability in Japanese. Japanese culture and history will be introduced within the context.

This course is to extend and develop rudimentary language learned in the first unit. It is designed to build upon the basic functional language while encouraging personal initiative and flexibility in using the target language. This intermediate level of Japanese aims to continue the process of acquisition of standard contemporary Japanese. This unit offers an intensive development of the grammar and skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, and allows for conversational skills to be extended. Accuracy and fluency will provide the basis for learners to acquire a well-balanced communication ability in Japanese. Influential elements upon the language, and their significance, are looked at in greater depth within the context. Sessions are structured to allow for maximum student participation.

This unit is designed for students at an upper intermediate/beginning advanced level in Japanese, and aims to develop further skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition to using a textbook, students will be introduced to authentic unedited Japanese newspaper and magazine articles, prose fiction, songs, and videotaped material. As this is a third year unit, students will be encouraged to communicate in Japanese rather than in English, and staff will speak in Japanese in class as far as practicable.

This is an advanced unit and will focus on reading classical folktales which are part of Japanese culture, and which are familiar to generations up to and including the present. This will not only enhance reading skills but also introduce students to the foundations of Japanese culture.

This is an advanced unit which develops students’ ability to read Japanese prose and encourages critical discussion of the issues raised in the material studied. Through seminar presentations students demonstrate their understanding of what they read and involve their peers in critical assessment of a contemporary Japanese non-fiction text, especially as it relates to Australia.
