Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.
This unit provides an introduction to the basic concepts of sport psychology of relevance to coaches and athletes seeking to understand psychological dimensions of sports performance. The efficacy of common interventions will be assessed through practical experiences and critical review of underlying theory.
EXSC236 Exercise Psychology
10 cp
Prerequisites EXSC130 Foundations of Motor Development and Behaviour and EXSC230 Motor Control and Learning
Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.
This unit develops an understanding of the psychological factors underlying human movement performance and behaviour in exercise and health. The issues of exercise take-up and adherence will be highlighted, and the theoretical underpinning of current interventions and motivational strategies analysed.
EXSC240 Exercise Physiology
10 cp
Prerequisites EXSC140 Physiological Bases of Exercise Science
Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of laboratory per semester.
This unit develops basic physiological knowledge applied to the topic of exercise under various environmental conditions. Students will be introduced to contemporary themes in the field. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic techniques for the evaluation of human performance.
EXSC241 Programming Resistance Training
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.
This unit builds upon the basic scientific principles of strength and conditioning and focuses upon the different programming techniques that enable prescription of exercises across the lifespan. Strength and conditioning principles will be applied to sports performance enhancement as well as exercises for rehabilitation from injury. Students will be challenged to design a number of specific programs for different stages of the lifespan from childhood to old age by using scientific principles.
EXSC250 HPE 2 - Gymnastics and Dance
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 120 hours of focused learning consisting of lectures, workshops, activity experiences and performances.
This unit is designed to provide students with knowledge about gymnastics and dance activities and how they might be used to provide personal development and core learning experiences within a health and physical education curriculum. A developmental perspective is taken and reference is made to ways in which principles derived from current Exercise Science knowledge can be applied in order to evaluate the effectiveness of selected activities. These activities contribute both to the goals of educational programs and the achievement of personal development outcomes for a range of individual abilities and experience.
EXSC260 Introduction to Sport Management
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.
