This unit is the first of a two-unit sequence that is designed to develop in students a critical awareness of a range of approaches, resources and procedures applicable to curriculum development, implementation and evaluation in economics, commerce and business studies. The two units provide for cumulative development of planning skills from single-strategy through to whole-course planning. Similarly, they expose students to a range of increasingly complex strategies and resources. The sequence enables students to draw upon and extend skills and knowledge acquired in professional studies units and to apply these to their teaching subjects. In so doing, students will also draw upon their foundation studies in economics and/or business for subject area content.

EDSS432 Geography Curriculum and Teaching 1

This unit is designed to prepare students to teach Geography in the junior secondary school. Students will become familiar with appropriate Geography syllabi and relevant teaching-learning strategies. The course will enable students to understand the role of Geography as an integral study of the spatial and ecological dimensions of the world. By identifying, analysing and utilising geographical skills and tools students will be able to gain an understanding of the processes and management of various environments. Through Geography students will develop an awareness of their responsibilities, as citizens, to the global environment.
EDSS433 Geography Curriculum and Teaching 2

This unit is designed to further develop student understanding of the scope, techniques and methods used in teaching Geography at the senior secondary level. Students will gain an understanding of the complex nature of a changing world and how to incorporate these geographical aspects in the classroom. Skills will be developed to enable students to demonstrate an understanding of geographical inquiry methodologies applicable to the classroom. Using the local area as a research resource and fieldwork are an integral part of this course, developing a student’s ability to analyse the local environment, both biophysical and cultural, in terms of teaching Geography.
EDSS434 Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) Curriculum and Teaching Studies 1

This unit prepares students for teaching studies of society and environment (SOSE) courses in secondary schools. Students will become familiar with the importance of the social sciences, SOSE and its background, the relevant syllabuses and the relationship between SOSE and thinking and learning.
SOSE is a complex learning area, which encompasses the disciplines of history, Geography, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Law, and the learning area of civics and environmental studies. The unit provides opportunities for students to investigate the philosophical and pedagogical characteristics of the key learning area and to consider various ways of translating syllabus requirements into worthwhile curriculum units and teaching experiences.
EDSS435 Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) Curriculum and Teaching Studies 2

This unit prepares students for the teaching of studies of society and environment (SOSE) courses in secondary schools. Students will investigate the content and skills relevant to a SOSE course along with an enquiry-based delivery approach. They will study planning for lessons and units of work, assessment associated with the delivery of SOSE and the role of technology in the SOSE area.
The unit provides opportunities for students to translate the philosophical and pedagogical characteristics of the key learning area and syllabus requirements into worthwhile curriculum units and learning experiences.
EDSS436 Humanities Teaching and Learning 1

This unit is designed to provide participants with strategies for planning, implementing and monitoring learning experiences for students studying humanities subjects in schools. The unit will build on documents relating to curricula in these areas. There is a focus on primary and junior secondary subjects with special attention given to the critical role of language in developing understanding in these areas. The development of understanding in a range of humanities curriculum areas will be explored through the use of inquiry and problem based learning, physical and social based learning, disciplinary and interdisciplinary learning, and learning technologies. The unit proceeds to designing and implementing units of work and developing strategies for assessing learning experiences for students. Special attention will be given catering for individual differences. This unit is also designed to develop in students an awareness of the opportunity that the discipline of humanities provides for meeting literacy learning needs namely in the reading, writing, and interpretation of a range of written and visual texts.
EDSS437 Humanities Teaching and Learning 2

This unit is designed to enable participants to develop an understanding of the way in which the humanities disciplines are taught and studied in the secondary school. It is designed to further develop and extend the participants’ competence and ability in the planning of learning experiences which enable school students to develop the knowledge and skills identified in the school curriculum, with a particular emphasis on the last three years of secondary school assessment of learning, both formative and summative, and the importance of language use in learning will be underlying themes. The unit will build on documents relating to humanities curricula. There is a focus on the use of information and communication technologies with particular attention to the use of CD material and the world-wide-web. The unit proceeds to explore strategies for engaging secondary students in exploring and participating in authentic research. Special attention will be given to the development of literacies and catering for individual differences within classes.
EDSS438 Society and Culture Curriculum and Teaching 1

This unit is designed to enable students to begin to understand teaching/learning methodologies of secondary studies of society and culture. With particular reference to the teaching of society and culture in junior secondary classes, students will consider appropriate classroom strategies which enable students to evaluate sources and make judgments based on them. Students will also develop strategies to enable their pupils to communicate effectively logical arguments concerning sociological and cultural issues and to research and investigate problems. The teaching of society and culture as an inquiry into the variety of human experiences, which can contribute to an understanding of the present society, is a recurrent theme in this unit.

This unit builds upon and extends the foundation work commenced in Society and Culture Curriculum and Teaching 1. It is designed to enable students to begin to understand teaching/learning methodologies of secondary studies of society and culture. With particular reference to the teaching in upper secondary classes, students will consider further appropriate classroom strategies, which enable students to evaluate sources and make judgments based on them. Students will also continue to develop strategies to enable their pupils to effectively communicate logical arguments concerning current issues in society and to research and investigate sociological and cultural problems.

Students will be given some examples of contemporary issues to guide and assist them as they revisit their approach to learning and teaching in human society and its environment. The program will be presented in a flexible manner so that individual learning needs can be accommodated as much as possible.

Consideration will also be given to the physical aspects of the counselling environment that impact upon students and caregivers.
EDSS610 Educating for Lifelong Career Development

This practical subject focuses on innovative teaching and learning strategies for career and work education for students to make successful transitions to further education, training and work. A wide range of strategies will be demonstrated and evaluated so as to provide careers professionals with a wide range of learning activities designed to develop in students competencies from the Australian Blueprint for Career Development. Special consideration will be given to the role of government and community agencies and strategies for collaborative action with schools.
EDSS611 Professional Practice and Development

This unit concentrates on developing skills for researching information, building relationships and making effective presentations in school settings that foster a whole school culture of career development for students. Particular emphasis is given to the design, implementation, management and evaluation of career development programs for students from the middle years to young adults. It aims to develop in practitioners a culture of ongoing professional development in a dynamic educational and work environment. There is a mandatory two day professional placement in an educational setting which aims to provide a realistic view of a broad range of client services.
EDSS612 The Postmodern Global Workplace

This unit examines issues in the workplace that affect the individual and society as a whole, ranging from work/life balance issues to skills shortages that are impacting on the economy. There is an emphasis on modern human resource practice and its effect on resume preparation, interviews and personality/vocational tests. Consideration will also be given to employability and enterprise skills and the way these are affecting the workplace and preparation for employment. Special emphasis will be given to the reforms in the national training framework with particular reference to vocational education in schools.
